California court fees and questions to ask about legal services. This guide is not a quote for Pardeep’s services.
Separate the costs
Court fees pay for court processes. Attorney fees pay for legal services. Other expenses can include service of papers or private mediation. Check the current county fee schedule rather than relying on another person’s total on Reddit.
If court fees are a barrier
California Courts explains how to ask for a fee waiver based on qualifying benefits, household income, or inability to meet basic needs and pay court fees. The court decides the request. A waiver does not cover attorney fees or private mediation.
Questions to ask before hiring help
- What work is included, and how will I be charged?
- Is a retainer required, and when would I need to replenish it?
- Which tasks or outside services would cost extra?
- Can I get help with a specific part of the case?
- How will I receive bills and discuss unexpected work?
Prepare without guessing the total
Gather your court papers and a short list of the issues that remain unresolved. Ask for an explanation of the proposed work and written fee terms. The examples in online discussions are not estimates for your case.
