The short answer

California child support takes account of both parents’ income and the time children spend in each parent’s care. A schedule by itself is not enough to work out the amount.

An introduction to California guideline support. It does not calculate or predict your court order.

Start with the complete information

The state’s child support agency explains that income and parenting time both matter. Equal time does not, by itself, establish that no support will be payable. The court determines the order using the applicable rules and case information.

Use an estimate for preparation

California Child Support Services offers a guideline calculator. Its results are estimates, not guarantees. Ask a family law facilitator or attorney to help you understand the inputs and any issues specific to your situation.

Gather the information you will discuss

  • Recent income records and information about other income sources.
  • Your current parenting schedule and relevant court orders.
  • Questions about childcare, health coverage, and other child-related expenses.
  • The dates and details of a change in income or parenting arrangements.

If circumstances have changed

The agency describes a process to request review or modification when qualifying circumstances change. A different work schedule or informal arrangement is not, by itself, a replacement court order. Ask what steps apply before changing payments.
